Take the meatless monday pledge!

Thanks for your interest in taking the Meatless Monday Pledge! This project aims to raise awareness about the power we have to reduce our impact on the environment (and create better health) by eating more plants and fewer animals.

The information collected in this form will be used to calculate the impact of this project. The questions below are asked because your answers affect the scale of the impact you will have (i.e. if you choose to go vegan as opposed to meatless your impact will be even greater; the more people you have in your house who are participating in the project, the more impact you will have, etc).

**If your pledge changes before the end of the project (e.g. if you are eating meatless more/fewer days per week, etc) please be sure to let us know so that we can accurately calculate the impact of this project.

How does reducing your meat consumption affect the environment?

Eating more plants and fewer animal products is one of the most powerful actions you can take to lighten your footprint on the planet.

Z

Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Animal agriculture is responsible for 18 percent of Greenhouse Gas Emissions, more than the combined exhaust from all transportation.

Livestock’s Long Shadow (UN Report)

Z

Water

1/4 lb of beef requires 425 gallons of water to produce. That works out to 6800 glasses of water.

Z

Pollution

A farm with 2500 dairy cows produces the same amount of waste as a city of 411,000 people (according to the “Risk Assessment Evaluation for Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations.”)

Land Use

In Canada it takes 7x more land to feed a non-vegetarian than a vegetarian. With 1/3 of the world’s cereal harvest and 90% of the world’s soy harvest being raised for animal feed, the energy required to grow those crops is a major factor in toxic gas emissions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will you use the information collected in the pledge?

The pledge information collected will be used to calculate the impact of this project. The questions are asked because answers affect the scale of the impact you will have (i.e. if you choose to go vegan as opposed to meatless your impact will be even greater; the more people you have in your house who are participating in the project, the more impact you will have, etc).

What happens once I have filled out the pledge?

Once you have filled out the pledge you will receive a welcome email with resources, and a weekly newsletter via email with recipes, inspiration and information for the duration of the pilot project (to the end of June). Please also join us on facebook and Instagram (meatlessmondaypr)!

What if my pledge changes before the end of the pilot project?

If your pledge changes between March and June, please let us know so we can make our calculations as accurate as possible. You can change your pledge at any time by filling out the pledge again with your new information. You will receive an email that will then allow you to click through and make your changes official.

Can I participate if I am already eating meatless/vegan?

Absolutely! Everyone’s efforts count, whether you’re new to vegetarianism/veganism, or if you’ve been eating this way for a long time. This campaign will measure how many meatless/vegan days participants accumulate and show the effects in a calculation based on www.shrinkthatfootprint.com so the more people who let us know they are making efforts to reduce their consumption of animal products, the more impact we will be able to demonstrate!
